Serpentine Barrens

Vast expanses of savanna-oak grasslands with soil derived from rock types usually found at the bottom of the ocean

Serpentine Barrens are a globally rare grassland/savanna ecosystem hosting an unusual array of endangered plant species. One such endangered site, the Cherry Hill Barrens, is located on property owned by Habonim Dror Camp Moshava in Harford County, Maryland. Campers and volunteers from the Moshava community have taken it upon themselves to restore the grasslands and protect the rare and endangered plants that live there.

The Cherry Hill Barrens are located on a private nature preserve that is closed to the general public. Access is restricted to protect the rare ecosystem.

Habonim Dror Camp Moshava, a summer camp in Harford County, Maryland, is a collaborative, caring community immersed in creative learning that empowers youth leadership and nurtures a connection to Israel and Jewish culture. Nature and environmental stewardship are woven into many aspects of the camp's programming.
